Improvised Robotic Devices (IRD)

Our customer wanted new ways of deriving a competitive advantage from Additive Manufacturing (AM). Our innovation, Improvised Robotic Devices, enables entirely new field robots to be rapidly designed and implemented (i.e. “improvised”) using a catalogue of standard modules, supplemented by bespoke 3D printed “glue” modules. All modules implement a universal electronic, electrical and mechanical interface in the form of a standard smart connector, enabling new robots to be constructed like Lego. Standard modules for power, sensing, processing and control can be rapidly reused from one application to another, and even from one domain (Land, Air or Sea) to another: the universal interface can be tailored in the field to suit the application, prioritising light weight for air applications, strength for land applications, and environmental sealing for maritime applications.
